The peony was selected for many reasons. Its large, spectacular flowers cannot be surpassed by many flowering plants, it is relatively easy to plant and care for, and fairly resistant to disease. As a perennial, it can be planted once and enjoyed for many years to come without much effort each year. After several years, the roots can be divided for propagation. And finally, the peony is very adaptable to various geographical locations. It thrives in Europe, Asia, and North America with the exception of the northern and southern extremities.
It is best to plant or transplant the peonies in the fall, yet they bloom in the spring (May, in the Virginia area). For this reason, it makes sense to choose the plants you like best in the spring, yet postpone the actual planting until fall. After the frost, the dead leaves must be trimmed off and the roots can be dug, divided and transplanted in new locations.
